wpe55.jpg (2079 bytes)eorge William Mundelein arrived in Chicago in 1916, and quickly "put the Church on the map. Mundelein instilled espirit de corps in the clergy and built a firm financial and administrative footing for the Archdiocese.
His leadership also reflected maturity, self-confident laity who contributed generously to the Church, and organized numerous political and social welfare activities. Popular devotions became larger, more highly organized, and less ethnic. A million pilgrims from all over the world came to Chicago in 1926, for the International Eucharistic Congress.

1952 World Council of Churches meets in Chicago, Catholics forbidden to participate.
1954 Marian Year celebration.
1955 Richard J. Daley first elected Mayor.
1958 Cardinal Stritch dies; Albert G. Meyer becomes Archbishop.
